Sue Quigley: Outside In

Sue Quigley has the sort of voice that careers are built on: it is strong, rich and distinctive and she uses it masterfully. At times she'll hold a note until your breastbone resonates; at others, she'll back off from the mic and draw you in to her private world - absolutely captivating singing. "Outside In" is her debut full-length cd and features eight songs that explore the emotional life in oblique but heartfelt terms; personally I found a lot of her metaphors and references didn't quite click for me:
"But you're saving something - for someone else/ Someone who'll run and not let you catch up/ Safe enough to be where you left them"
Perhaps the meaning teases itself out eventually, perhaps it's just me and all this seems perfectly direct to another listener.

That quibble aside, however, there is so much to enjoy and treasure on this album, moments in songs that touch an emotional chord and make it quiver. Produced with admirable simplicity and clarity by Joe Reineke with Sue Quigley, it's the guitar playing that shines almost as brightly as that voice. Sue Quigley's own playing on acoustic guitar is very atmospheric, whilst David Wall on electric guitar brings a controlled intensity to his supporting role that adds a whole extra palette of colour. With John Mills on bass and Roy Adler on drums capable of building a huge backdrop of sound, this is music that at its best you can lose yourself in. You may find yourself completely drawn in, lost in a maelstrom of emotional intensity: very highly recommended.

Last year I had the distinct pleasure of obtaining a copy of Sue Quigley's self-titled debut EP.  I was hooked.  So much so, in fact, that my neighbors began to wonder what was wrong with me that I couldn't listen to anything else for weeks.  I've now been twice-blessed as I recently received a copy of her new, full-length CD Outside In.  That voice; those lyrics; the synergy of the band she surrounds herself with -- Ms. Quigley doesn't disappoint.

The first thing that everyone seems to notice is 'that VOICE'.  Sue has a soulful, full-bodied, woman's voice that makes it clear she's walked the walk and has earned the right to sing the proverbial talk.  Like some of the influences listed on her MySpace page (Concrete Blonde, Stevie Nicks, K's Choice, PJ Harvey, The Pretenders, Bonnia Raitt and Aimee Mann), Sue's powerful alto reverberates up and down your spine (provided you have the volume turned up enough .. which I highly recommend) and is what stays with you long after the music has ended.  It's clear yet gritty; sad yet hopeful.  Add to that her obvious experience with heartbreak and you end up with well-written material being performed by the actual participant.  We've all heard it said that misery is a writer's greatest form of inspiration.  If that is true, then Sue's been through some hell recently.  Fortunately for us, she's sharing.

The band consists of Sue on vocals and rhythm guitar, David Wall (American School of Warsaw) on lead guitar, Anthony Monaco (Loophole) on bass and back-up vocals, and Roy Adler (Mantis, Rockaway) on drums and percussion.    This is a new line-up of musicians from Sue's EP band and it's pretty clear that they were meant to play together. Here one can actually hear the instruments. Of particular note is lead guitarist David Wall's talent, whether in tandem with Sue's strong rhythm guitar, or on powerful solos such as on 'Drop The Other Shoe', where I swear he's channeling Lindsey Buckingham.  Engineer and co-producer Joe Reineke (Alien Crime Syndicate) has done a superb job of supporting Sue's gift for songwriting by creating a foundation that doesn't overwhelm.

Sue and the band have been busy, being voted as one of the Best New Acts of 2005 by Kweevak.com, playing numerous gigs in the Seattle Area (Bite of Seattle, Freemont Fair, Pride Festival) and even traveling to New York City to participate in ChickSingerNight ( www.chicksingernight.com) at The Bitter End.  As a former resident of Greenwich Village, and an avid patron of The Bitter End (albeit many years ago), I know it's a testament to Sue's abilities to be invited to play there. Sue and the band were also featured in both the June and August (CD Review) issues of Seattle Sound magazine, and were selected to be filmed by Comcast Cable TV for their "On-Demand Bite of Seattle Bands"

Favorite tracks include "Drop The Other Shoe", particularly with that incredible guitar solo.  The ballad "Right Where You Left It' grows like a beautiful vine, starting simply with only Sue's voice and percussion accompaniment.   The opening track, "Walk Away", is another favorite with the steady rhythm of Sue's acoustic guitar, beautiful harmonies on the refrain, heartfelt lyrics of love gone bad and another infectious guitar riff provided by David Wall.

'Walk Away', 'Your Truth' and 'Without A Trace' are available on Sue's MySpace page (www.myspace.com/suequigleyband).  CDs are available on CDBaby ( www.cdbaby.com), Silver Platters (www.silverplatters.com) and on the band's website (www.suequigley.com).

"Althought her muse is never named, and almost every track on her new full length album betrays the emotion behind these songs of lost love, some of SueQuigley's music will leave you tapping your toe, singing the choruses for days-as in "Drop the Other Shoe" and the infectious "Walk AWay", boasting the hot guitar licks of David Wall, and producer Joe Reineke (Alien Crime Syndicate) brings the raw grit that best showcases Quigley's voice and poignant lyrics to the fore"

"Sue Quigley Band"
Genre: rock

"Sue Quigley Band treats us to an acoustic driven rock on this modest, 6 track teaser. The disc is so [truly] listener friendly that I couldn’t help but listen again so I could catch everything I didn’t the first time….cuz I wanted to. Sue packs a temperamental punch with her vocal clarity and the lyrics are beautifully phrased which compliments the simplistic production. Particularly enjoyable were the guitar rhythms and percussive adornments that were anything but not welcome. My only suggestion for the next project would be to add some back up vocals : ) Another great woman artist takes her place on my shelf of faves…. "

RealPlayer is having problems with my Sue Quigley demo. Instead of identifying a single by this promising Seattle-based singer/songwriter and band featuring John Mills on bass and backing vocals, John Martiniello on drums and backing vocals, Gary Sorenson on electric guitar, and Sue herself on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, it instead suggest albums recorded by the likes of UK hip hop heads Mark B and Blade to pop muppets Maroon 5. From the sublime to the ridiculous indeed.

The so-to-speak A-side (remember them?) instead recalls Simon and Garfunkel reformed as (Shawn) Colvin and Garfunkel. It´s a cover of ´Hazy Shade of Winter´ as reimagined by Aimee Mann. The other tracks, ´Without A Trace´ and ´Your Truth´, meanwhile, represent the halfway house between SoCal folk and Nashville country. Now geographically speaking at least, I make that Texan alt-rock.

Criminally unsigned, this single should do much to raise awareness of Quigley beyond the confines of Washington State. Then RealPlayer will know who The Sue Quigley Band truly are. Maroon 5? Adam Levine can only dream of ever sounding this good.

"Sue Quigley has a magnificent voice. Her warm, full-bodied alto is reminiscent of early Melissa Etheridge, Susan Tedeshi and Bonnie Raitt and, like those artists, she's also an accomplished guitar player... "

SUE QUIGLEY BAND – SUE QUIGLEY BAND: Sue Quigley is the lead vocalist, songwriter and one of two guitar players in the band. A drummer and bassist provide the up-tempo rhythms on this self-titled, six-track EP. Their music is a combination of rock and pop acoustic. Sue sings her savvy, honest lyrics with poise and passion. The music is soulful and the band, John Mills, John Martiniello and Gary Sorensen are tight. The group is currently touring locally and two of their songs have been used by indie -filmmaker Tony Herbert. The production on this CD is crisp and clear allowing the musicians to shine. Each song has something special to offer but of particular note was 'Naked Heart' and 'Waiting'. Strong drumming and subtle bass lines create the undertow of 'Naked Heart' as the guitars flow with Sue's strong vocal currents. The song goes through a number of pace changes and fine instrumental breaks. 'Waiting' has an edgy, sultry tone combined with striking beats and soaring guitars. The Sue Quigley Band demonstrates that they have skill and synergy on their debut release!
